Profile

Cupiuba is yellow brown, sometimes with presence of internal stresses. It has an unpleasant odour. It has clearly demarcated sapwood. The grain is interlocked and the texture is medium. Density at 12 % moisture content: 0.84 g/cm3. The blunting effect is fairly high, peeling is not recommended or without interest and slicing is reported to be good. A careful sanding is necessary due to interlocked grain. Pre-boring recommended to avoid splits. Gluing is correct for interior only. Cupiuba dries slowly and the drying must be done slowly as well. Cupiuba is moderately durable to fungi and is durable to dry wood borers; sapwood demarcated (risk limited to sapwood). Resistance to brown cubical rot: good to very good. Resistance to white rot: moderate.

Cupiuba can be used for several applications such as:
• interior: e.g. furniture, stairs, flooring, industrial or heavy flooring, sliced veneer
• exterior: e.g. wood frame house, heavy carpentry, panelling, joinery

The unpleasant odour may limit the use of this timber. For furniture end-uses, filling and varnishing are necessary.

Typical use

Industrial or heavy flooring, Heavy carpentry, Sliced veneer, Exterior panelling, Wood frame house, Flooring, Current furniture or furniture components, Exterior joinery, Stairs (inside), Turned goods.
